Looking to get a clean computer? Cleaning your computer can help extend its life! You can clean your keyboard, your mouse, your screen, and even your CPU. We recommend cleaning your computer every 3 to 6 months, depending on your environment. Remember to power down and remove all cables before beginning.
The Keyboard
Begin by unplugging your keyboard. Turn the keyboard upside and shake it to remove any debris. We recommend spraying in between the keys with a can of compressed air. To clean the keys, lightly dip a cotton swab or cloth in rubbing alcohol and rub around each key. You can then go back with a dry lint free rag to dry and remove excess dust. If you’re looking for a more extensive clean, you can remove individual keys by popping them off. You can even individually wash the keys while you have them removed. Once every piece is clean and dry, you can pop the keys back on with a small amount of pressure.
The Mouse
Unplug your mouse. Use a damp (not wet) cloth to wipe away surface dirt. You can then go back over the mouse with a damp disinfectant wipe. Immediately dry the mouse with a microfiber cloth. Be careful to not let any liquid drip into the openings.
The Screen
First spray your screen with canned air. This will remove any surface dust the screen may have collected. Next, you can make a homemade solution of vinegar and distilled water, or if you prefer, you can buy a cleaning solution. Dampen a soft rag with the solution and gently wipe the screen. Try a dry microfiber cloth for daily screen cleaning. Remember not to use any paper products because they will scratch your screen.
The CPU
Dust can layer and prevent heat from escaping, causing your CPU to overheat. Dust can also clog your cooling fans, compromising their effectiveness. You need to shut down and unplug your CPU before cleaning anything. Canned air is recommended for blasting all the dirt and dust out of your machine. Hold a pen or pencil to prevent fan blades from spinning while cleaning.
Now that your computer is clean, you’re ready to take on the world! Be sure to clean any accidental spills as soon as they happen as they could seriously damage your machine. Have any other tech cleaning tips? Let us know in the comments below!
