Google-Pigeon-updateGoogle’s updated search algorithm, Pigeon, which was released in the US back in July, has now been released in the UK, Canada, and Australia. The new algorithm is designed to improve local search listings, though it appears Google is still playing with Pigeon updates. Has your business been affected by the flight of Pigeon? While updates to algorithms are supposed to be perfect, they hardly are. Various local businesses have seen a reduction in their rankings- quite a concern to growing and thriving businesses alike. To improve your chances of popping up in the now smaller local listing pack, claim your business through Google by creating a Google+ Local Business page. By choosing the red balloon option, you will be found on local listings. Make sure your social media sites and your company website are up to date as well- list your location in all your meta descriptions!

search Updates to the algorithm also include improved distance and location ranking parameters. When searching for a restaurant or business in a given area, conventional and informal neighborhood terms are now both considered in search results. Local results are being tied to standard web rankings as well.

Local listings are based off of domain authority, backlinks, and other SEO factors. Sites like Yelp, UrbanSpoon, and TripAdvisor are receiving higher visibility. Before, Google was ranking its own reviews and directories above such sites. Now, directories and directory listings are receiving greater weight thanks to the Pigeon update. Businesses want to make sure they are listed in each directory related to their field. Include your city and state as well as your area code phone number. Adding as many local details will ensure your business a spot in the new searches.
