Recycling vs. Repurposing: How to properly dispose of old IT Equipment

Posted by Dan Blatter on Mar 2, 2012 10:37:00 AM

repurposeAt ServerMonkey, we’re committed to doing everything we can to contribute to a cleaner, greener tomorrow. We hold ourselves to a high standard as a company, taking actions such as participating in recycling programs, using reusable cups and utensils, and taking advantage of videoconferencing tools. But what we’re most proud of in terms of “green credentials” is our role in the refurbishment and repurposing of IT equipment. Here’s why:

The Differences Between Recycling and Repurposing

Recycling is a concept most of us understand well, and refers to the process of converting used materials or waste into reusable material. Recycling is by all means great for the environment, but is it always the best option? After all, recycling requires energy in the form of transportation, as well as in the recycling process itself. While recycling does reduce the amount of raw materials needed to manufacture new products, it is not 100 percent emission free.

Repurposing, on the other hand, refers to taking a product that some may consider being at the end of its lifecycle, and restoring it to a functional condition or finding an alternate use for it. Repurposing requires minimal energy, and by giving a product a second chance at life, you immediately save that item from adding to a landfill.

Technology Repurposing & Refurbishment

At ServerMonkey, we don’t just repurpose IT equipment – we go one step further and put every piece of equipment we offer through a rigorous six step quality process to ensure that our refurbished products work as reliably as brand new equipment. Performed by our certified quality professionals, our inspection and testing process guarantees that our refurbished servers and IT equipment meets the highest quality that our customers demand.

Before throwing out your company’s old server when it’s time to upgrade, think about whether that piece of equipment could be repurposed for continued use. Many nonprofit organizations could benefit from technology that’s a couple years old, or you could even get a return on your investment through our technology Buy Back Program.
